Novel (1)

This course is an introduction to both the world and art of the novel. Students are encouraged to analyse how the socioeconomic, political and cultural life in the nineteenth century which have contributed to shaping the novels understudy. Students acquire an ability to critically read the literary works through analyzing the elements of the novel (setting, plot, story, characterization, etc.). Through an in-depth study of the literary works, students will be acquainted with the various styles and trends within this rich genre.

Intended Learning Outcomes

 On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of cultural and historical background of the ages of the novels under study.
  2. Read selected major English novels from the nineteenth centuries.
  3. Explain, narrate, compare/contrast elements of the novel.
  4. Studying various formal features of the genre, and their use in creating narratives of self and society. 
  5.  Examining how the novels under study responded to the social contexts in which they were produced. 
  6.  Relate analytical and critical thinking.
