Theater (Drama)

This course introduces students to theater as a live performing art. Throughout the course students understand the connection between theater and drama along with select basic concepts of performance. They read and analyze a number of selected play texts, discuss their dramatic structures and watch their theatrical performance, paying close attention to the significant roles of the makers of theater such as the actor, the designer, the playwright, the director and the audience. The students also act the roles of the makers of theater in a theatrical performance with reference to a selection of play texts that belong to various dramatic schools of different ages.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the cultural, historical and aesthetic significance of the theater.
  2. identify the different roles of the makers of theater.
  3. understand the relationship between drama, theater and society.
  4. discuss the characters and the dramatic structures of selected play texts.
  5. Identify the interconnection between theatre and different media that foreground technology as embraced by recent trends of theatre and performance.
