Translation 1

This course introduces the basic concepts of translation. It also introduces text types and relevant techniques of translation. It aims at training the students to translate a variety of text types, such as political speech, marketing campaigns, op-ed articles, brochures, leaflets, and printed advertisements from Arabic into English and vice versa. The course emphasizes a problem-solving approach, supported by text analysis (both in the pre-translation phase and in subsequent editing and evaluation).

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify translation as a process.
  2. Outline the basic features of different text types.
  3. Relate the translation process to text types.
  4. Recognize different types of equivalence between the source and target languages.
  5. Describe concepts and terms appropriate to the study of translation.
