Introduction to News Reporting

This course provides an introductory framework on journalism history and aims to introduce the essential techniques of news reporting and writing in both print and online news. Students will understand the foundations of gathering, selecting, and reporting news, in addition to knowing how newsrooms work, and what it takes to be a reporter. This course explores all theoretical and practical concepts concerning covering news. Moreover, students will acquire the skills needed for writing basic news stories, in addition to learning how to check facts using the internet, and to promote their work using traditional and digital media. Student will identify the ethical concerns involved in gathering reporting and writing news.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. Exploring the history of journalism from print to the web from general perspective.
  2. Identifying basic news reporting and writing techniques in both print media and online news. 
  3. Understanding all theoretical and practical concepts concerning covering news: five W’s and How, hard news vs soft news, news values, breaking news, news sources, online reporting.
  4. Recognizing ethical concerns involved in gathering reporting and writing news.
