This course introduces students to the fundamentals of public speaking skills. It enriches their knowledge about the oral communication process in an attempt to enhance their interpersonal and communication skills. The course also aims at encouraging the students to communicate fluently and accurately in media.
Also, the course aims to present to the students the fundamentals of vocal production and movement for the stage. Including breathing, kinesthetic awareness, vocal placement and resonance, physical storytelling, and the interconnectedness of voice and body.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this course students will be able to:
1.1 Identify the elements of the communication process
1.2 Know the pronunciation and speaking problems that impede the communication process.
1.3 Understand how to communicate verbally in a functional and accurate way in the target language
1.4 Understand how to optimize verbal and non-verbal communication skills when presenting
1.5 Describe the most suitable delivery method based on the audience, the environment and the message being delivered
1.6 Recall posture and movement to give additional impact to verbal messages
1.7 Outline information in a clear and concise manner
1.8 Define different techniques, approaches and forms of talks
1.9 Outline the ways to prepare presentations and visual aids to be interesting, persuasive and to communicate key messages
1.10 Relate techniques for adding greater vocal variety and engaging an audience
1.11 Define projecting and vary the pitch, pace and tone of the voice to gain and retain audience interest and reinforce the presentation messages.
1.12 Identify features of group communication (debates)
1.13 Identify the persuasion used in media messages and apply it
1.14 Show awareness of posture, vocal quality, personal appearance, and verbal and nonverbal communication in all speaking situations.
